Good morning and welcome to today’s blog, a new exclusive feature available only on our daily newsletter for our awesome subscribers.
Thank you for checking it out and please share this with anybody you think might be interested and I will like you even more.
In case you were not aware, I have been covering LeFlore County sports since the 1990s, off and on. But consistently since 2009.
Before we get into the main gist of today’s column, the picture above is one from my drone looking back to the east with Poteau Mountain in the background.
I got an interesting question the other day. I was asked who was the best basketball player I had seen in LeFlore County during that time.
My first thought was Jordan Eagleroad or Taggert Lockhart. Then, I realized it was probably Tylor Perry of Spiro. Now that Talihina team which included Eagleroad and Lockhart was probably the best team I have seen and did win a state championship, anybody who got to see Perry play was blessed. I have seen many good shooters and one great one in Perry.
I can’t do a list like this without upsetting or leaving off somebody, but I started thinking about the other sports.
Probably the best in football was Jace Pitchford, Poteau’s quarterback when the Pirates made the finals in 2013. He made some plays that were impossible to describe. Another really good one was Blake Smittle, the best running back I have seen at Heavener. Talihina also had some dang good football players during the Tigers’ dominant stretch throughout most of the last decade.
Baseball is even tougher. The Wister pitchers from back when the Wildcats won state were special, Koda Glover of Heavener reached the major leagues and I can’t remember or name all the excellent baseball players.
For softball, it was probably Taylor Collins of Heavener. I have never seen a player hit a softball like she could. For girls’ basketball, it was Jalei Oglesby of Howe.
Let me know your thoughts on the subject. Again, this list is not complete, just my thoughts on a cold Sunday morning which is way too early.
Be kind.
