Heavener, Poteau playing in quarterfinals
The Oklahoma high school soccer playoffs resume Friday in quarterfinal play with Heavener visiting Casady in Oklahoma City and Poteau hosting Community Christian.
Heavener’s match at Casady starts at 6 p.m. while the Community Christian match at Poteau begins at 7 p.m.
The Wolves are 11-3 after defeating Commerce, 4-0, in the opening round. Casady is 12-1.
Poteau enters Friday’s match with a 10-5 record after downing Miami, 4-1 in the opening round. Community Christian is 11-4 and lost to Casady, 6-1, during district play.
Wister, Panama advances in regional play
The Wister and Panama baseball teams advanced to the regional championship games in the Class 2A regional tournaments they are hosting.
Both teams won two games Thursday to advance to the first champion game 6 p.m. Friday.
Wister opened with a 5-3 victory over county foe Pocola before shutting out Wilburton in the second game, 6-0. Walters, which lost its opener to Wilburton, later eliminated the Indians, 13-5.
In the Wildcats’ win over Pocola, Wister built a 4-0 before Pocola scored three times in the top of the fourth to get back into the game. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Riley Crane went five innings to get the win for Wister. He allowed three hits and three runs, two earned, with five strikeouts and two walks. Kord Fenton pitched one inning with three strikeouts before Dartyn Meeks pitched one inning to get the save. He struck out two and walked one.
Crane helped his own cause by doubling and going 2-4 with a run scored.

Wister was actually outhit against Wilburton (7-6), but took advantage of three errors by the Diggers and scored five runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good.
Landon Donaho pitched all seven innings, giving up the seven hits with no runs while striking out five and walking one.
Ty Slone led the Wildcats at the plate, going 2-2 with a RBI and a run.

Panama defeated Fairview in its opener, 10-2, before downing Tonkawa in the second game, 10-0.
Against Fairview, the Razorbacks led 5-2 before scoring five times in the sixth inning to seal the win.
Shawn Hogan was the winning pitcher for Panama. He went the distance, giving up six hits and two runs, both unearned, with 11 strikeouts and two walks.
Dylan Restine homered and was 2-3 with four RBI and two runs, Talan Fairless went 2-4 with two runs and Brex Caldwell homered while going 1-4 with two RBI and a run.

Heavener all-conference players named
Heavener’s Cayleigh McGee, Mariana Garcia and Ava Cartwright were named to the Black Diamond all-conference team for slow pitch softball.
The three players led the Lady Wolves to a 16-8 record and ranked 14th in the state.

Obituary for Jo Milligan
Goldia Jo Milligan of Poteau (formerly of Heavener) was born Nov. 21, 1941 in the Reichert community in Heavener to Emmitt and Mae (Metcalf) Milligan and passed away May 1, 2024 in Poteau at 82.
Funeral service is 4 p.m. Saturday at Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener, with Reverend Ricky Huggins officiating. Burial will follow in the Reichert Cemetery, under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener.
Jo was a longtime resident of the area. She was a 1959 graduate of Heavener High School. Jo attended Northeastern State University and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a business degree. She was an IT Specialist at Shell Oil Company. Jo was a member of the Faithbridge Church in Heavener. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Jo was an avid Oklahoma Sooner fan and will be deeply missed.
She is survived by
Two great nieces Tonya Woodruff and husband William of Poteau, and Dana Gilliam of Poteau.
Two great-great nieces Megan Woodruff and Samantha Gilliam, both of Fort Smith, Arkansas.
And a host of friends
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Curtis Plummer; and one niece Janet Tolbert and husband Jerry Tom.
Pallbearers are her family.
Viewing is from noon until 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until service time Saturday.

Obituary for Heath Miller
Heath Miller of Richardson, Texas was born Feb. 18, 1967 in College Station, Texas to Dr. L. Lynn and Edwina (Goss) Miller and passed away April 25, 2024 in Pearsall, Texas at the age of 57.
Funeral service is 2 p.m. Saturday at Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener with Reverend LeAnna Brun officiating. Interment will follow in Heavener Memorial Park, under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener.
Heath was a truck driver for Melton Trucking Company. He loved to play his guitar, play with his dogs, Buddy and Bradley, and work out. Heath was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving family members are his wife, Amy (Gann) Miller.
Two daughters Paris Miller and Harley Miller.

Heath was loved and adored by numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Steven Charles Burton of Shady Point was born Feb. 9, 1967 in Rochester, New York to Roger G. and Alice (Mahaffey) Burton and passed away April 26, 2024 in Poteau at the age of 57.
A family memorial service will be at a later date.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener.
Steven was a long-time resident of the area and a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Steven was a veteran, where he served his country in the United States Army during Desert Storm.
He is survived by his wife, Crystal Burton

Funeral service for Kimber Leigh Kirchner-Martinez of Cameron is 2 p.m. Friday at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau with Jim Cook officiating.
Burial will follow at James Cemetery in Calhoun, under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
She was born April 11, 2024 in Tulsa to Kara Leigh Kirchner and Juan Andres Martinez and passed away April 11, 2024 in Tulsa.
Survivors include her mother, Kara Leigh Kirchner; father, Juan Andres Martinez; siblings Cali Rain Lovell, Joe Silus Lejeune, and Apple Louise Lejeune; and grandparents Trudy Walkup, and Kenneth Hugh Kirchner.
She was preceded in death by an uncle, Leslie Adkins.
