Avery Brown, a seventh grader, at LeFlore Elementary School won the school Spelling Bee earlier in the week. She will next compete March 4 at the Tulsa Tech – Owasso Conference Center.

Funeral service for Wanda Peck set
Funeral service for Wanda Peck, 96, of Poteau is 10 a.m. Monday at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau with Jim Cook and Paul Brady officiating. Burial will follow at Monroe Cemetery, under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
She was born July 30, 1926 in Monroe to Ora (Hicks) Newman and Fred W. Newman and passed away Feb. 9, 2023 in Poteau.
Survivors include her son Richard Peck and wife Beth; seven grandchildren Lisa and Jerry Piguet, Jamie Baier, Chris and Ashley Long, Joey Long, Mandy Peck, Steve and Regina Peck, Lauren and Nick Peck-Weisenfels; 12 great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Peck; daughter, Linda F. Long, brothers, Malvin, and Joe Paul Newman; sisters, Oweeta Carroll and Mabel Woods.
Pallbearers are Steve Peck, Chris Long, Joey Long, Cody Piguet, Josh Piguet, and Jerry Piguet Jr.
Visitation is Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Evans and Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.

Funeral service for Sean Ashcraft, 57, of Panama is 10 a.m. Saturday at Green Country Cowboy Church in Wister with Pastor Hank Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Poker Bend/Royal Oak Cemetery in Panama, under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home of Spiro.
He was born Aug. 18, 1965 in Lodi, California to Patricia Jean (Poteet) Ashcraft and Delmer Fred Ashcraft and passed away Feb. 7, 2023 in Poteau.
Survivors include his wife, Shari Ashcraft; daughters Shauna Keck and husband Billy, Shannon Ashcraft, and Shayna Ashcraft; grandchildren Dakota Younger, Ryan Shelby, Madison Shelby, Colten Shelby, Kasander Keck and Kylynn Coble; father, Delmer Ashcraft; and a brother, Scott Ashcraft.
He was preceded in death by his mother Patricia Ashcraft; and a sister Loree Darrough.
Pallbearers are Billy Keck, Chris Shelby, Tony Courtney, Ulises Silos, Chass Ward and Mike Wilson.
There is no viewing or visitation.

He was born Feb. 7, 1935 in Michigan to Virginia (Holmes) Burke and John Richard Christy Sr. and passed away Feb. 8, 2023 in Spiro.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Jane Christy; daughters Pam Sivero, Julie McShane and husband Tim, and Shari Jennings and husband Larry; grandchildren Dena Miller, Krista Rivera, Corie Coull, Danny Sivero,Brittany Sivero, Tyler McShane, Travis McShane and Trent McShane; and nine great grandchildren.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Mallory Martin Funeral Chapel in Spiro.
