Last day to register for voting approaching
Oct. 11 is the last day to apply for voter registration in order to be eligible to vote in the Nov. 5 general election, according to LeFlore County Board Secretary Sharon Steele.
She said persons who are United States citizens, residents of Oklahoma, and at least 17 1-2 years old are eligible to apply for voter registration. However, you must be at least 18-years-old to vote.
Applications must be received by the county election board or postmarked no later than midnight Oct. 11. Applications postmarked after that time will be accepted, but will not be processed until after the Nov. 5 election. Applications may also be submitted to any motor vehicle agency that is also an official voter registration agency by the submission deadline.
Applicants will be notified in writing when their application has been processed. Approved voters receive a voter identification card in the mail. Some may receive a letter explaining the reason the application was not approved. Steele said those who do not receive a response within 30 days of submitting their application should contact the county election board office immediately.
Applications must be approved by the County Election Board secretary in order to vote.
Registered voters who have moved to LeFlore County from a different county or state will need to complete a new voter registration application in order to be eligible for elections in LeFlore County. If you have moved within the county and need to update your address, you may make changes online using the OK voter portal at Oklahoma.gov/elections/ovp or complete a voter registration application.
Applications can be downloaded from the state election board website at Oklahoma.gov/elections. You may also complete a form at your county election board. Most post offices, tag agencies and public libraries have applications available upon request.

The Heavener boys had a perfect score of 15 in winning the Wister cross country meet Monday.
Seth Lynch was the overall meet champion. Parker Brand, Diego Cruz, Isaac Cook, Morgan Altstatt, Jerred Boss and Geren Palmer all medaled.
For the Lady Wolves, Chloe McMahan was the meet champion. Also receiving medals were Allison Palmer, Jenna Scroggins, Gracie Springfield, Christa Keller and Alexa Cruz.
Heavener’s boys also dominated the Muldrow cross country meet Thursday with 19 points, defeating the second-place team by 19 points.
Senior Seth Lynch was the individual champion. Also medaling for Heavener were Jerred Boss, Issac Cook, Geren Palmer, Parker Brand, Diego Sanches and Morgan Altstatt as they all finished in the top 10.

District opens for most teams this week
Play time is over for all of the LeFlore County football teams aside from Arkoma.
After playing three non-district games over the first four weeks, all the other LeFlore County teams start the second half of the season, district play, this week.
Spiro gets Week 4 started Thursday when the Bulldogs (0-3) have the difficult task of traveling to undefeated Vian.
In Friday’s games, Poteau (2-1), is coming off a bye as the Pirates visit Stilwell, 1-2; in what might be the biggest game in the county this week, undefeated Warner (3-0) travels to Pocola (2-1), which will have an impact on district standings; Panama (2-1) hosts winless Chouteau (0-3); undefeated Talihina (3-0) will look to start off district play with a win over winless Allen (0-3); and Arkoma (3-0) in a non-district game, will host Quinton (2-2).
The other big game this week has Heavener (2-1) trying to bounce back after last week’s loss to Charleston, Arkansas, when the Wolves visit Hugo (2-1) for the second straight season. The Wolves rallied from behind last year for a 36-27 win, a victory that helped send the Wolves to the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
The final tune-up for the start of football district openers next week for most of the LeFlore County schools had mixed results.
Talihina stayed perfect with a 43-8 win over Broken Bow’s JV team Thursday night, Panama bounced back from last week’s loss to Heavener with a 39-13 win over Wilburton and Arkoma, which does not start districts next week, improved to 4-0, with another blowout win, 66-16, this week at Bowlegs.
Heavener and Pocola dropped their first games as the Wolves lost big at Arkansas power Charleston, 55-0 (see STORY) and the Indians found out why Vian has pretty much ruled small school football over the last couple of decades as the Wolverines blew out the Indians, 67-34.
In the Battle of the Bulldogs, Muldrow got its offense going in the second half and defeated Spiro, 36-7.
Poteau, 2-1, had a bye this week.

Charleston passes Heavener’s test
By CRAIG HALL
CHARLESTON, Ark.—Heavener’s football team went into Friday’s game at Charleston, Arkansas, hoping to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2003.
It wasn’t meant to be.
The Tigers, now 1-2, recovered two kickoffs Heavener did not recover, returned an interception for a touchdown and used an offensive machine led by a quarterback, Carter Little, all the colleges in Arkansas should be recruiting, to roar past the Wolves at Charleston’s impressive stadium.
Charleston dropped a couple of passes and might have missed a tackle, but the Tigers were pretty much perfect otherwise, going ahead 48-0 at the half before handing the Wolves their first loss of the season, 55-0.
Heavener was missing a trio of players including senior standout Jaxon Armstrong, who were hoping to get healed up prior to next Saturday’s district opener at Hugo.
With the threat of Armstrong running out of the wildcat and running back Carson Payne, Heavener’s rushing attack had been impressive in wins over Central and Panama.
But the Wolves had trouble moving the ball against the Tigers, which was not a problem for Charleston.
The Tigers used a passing attack relying on rollouts and quick passes Heavener had trouble with throughout. Other than a couple of snacks, Charleston passed and ran the ball like a well-oiled machine.
Charleston, which has won six state championships, including one two years ago, starts only two seniors and should be even better when the Tigers visit Heavener next year.
Under Jeff Broyles, the Wolves didn’t win every game, of course, but this group of Wolves haven’t been blown in for a couple of seasons.
Despite the relatively short distance between Heavener and Charleston, this was believed to be the first meeting of the two schools in football.

CASC health program enrollment grows
POTEAU-- Carl Albert State College’s Allied Health programs are showing growth and success with record-breaking enrollment figures and job placement rates. Allied Health has now become the largest academic program at the college, attracting students wanting careers in healthcare.
The nursing program has seen demand, particularly the online LPN to RN program, which has seen success in its first year. Given the high interest, the program is preparing to increase its student intake in year two to accommodate the growing interest from students.
Another significant growth area is the pre-sports medicine program, as more students pursue careers in this field.
The physical therapist assistant (PTA) program is also growing. The program boasts a 93 percent graduation rate, with 100 percent of licensed graduates securing employment upon graduation. The program has also seen over an 11 percent increase in enrollment over the past two years.
In addition to academic success, the PTA program operates a pro bono therapy clinic. The clinic provides essential services to the community and offers students experience..
Further expanding its impact, Allied Health professionals at Carl Albert State College will soon begin overseeing the on-campus telemedicine clinic, providing healthcare options for both students and employees.
