Cowboys drop series finale
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Oklahoma State came up short of a series sweep Sunday as the Cowboys dropped a 15-10 contest to West Virginia at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 18-10 overall and 5-4 in the Big 12, while WVU is now 16-12 and also 5-4 in the league.
Zach Ehrhard continued to swing a hot bat as he was 5-for-6 with a home run for the Pokes, while Nolan Schubart and Carson Benge also went deep.
Starter Gabe Davis, one of seven pitchers used by the Cowboys, took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season. He worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing five runs, only one of them earned, on one hit while issuing three walks and striking out three.
OSU took the game’s initial lead in the second. Taking advantage of a pair of walks and a wild pitch, the Pokes went up 1-0 on a two-out RBI single by Lane Forsythe.
But the Mountaineers answered in the bottom of the frame. A pair of OSU errors led to a two-RBI double by Spencer Barnett, and an RBI groundout made the score 3-1; WVU tacked on three more runs on a bases loaded double to go up 6-1. Five of the six runs in the inning were unearned.
WVU extended its lead to 9-1 in the third before the Cowboys got back on the scoreboard on a leadoff homer by Ehrhard in the fourth. OSU plated another run in the inning when Kyler Proctor, who doubled, later scored on a wild pitch.
OSU cut its deficit in half in the sixth on a pinch-hit, two-RBI double by Kollin Ritchie to make the score 10-5, but the home team once again answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs on four hits.
Trailing 13-5, the Pokes cut into their deficit again on Benge’s two-run homer in the seventh. The blast was Benge’s fourth of the season.
The Mountaineers countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh before OSU mounted another rally in the eighth.
A two-run bomb by Schubart, his fourth of the season, brought home the first two runs before a bases-loaded walk to Colin Brueggemann cut the OSU deficit to 15-10. The Cowboys were poised for more with the bases still full and no outs, but a fly out and two strikeouts ended the threat.
The Cowboys return to action Tuesday when they host Oral Roberts before the Bedlam Series against Oklahoma this weekend at O’Brate Stadium.
